As an admirer of the city of Pittsburgh who lived there for a year (attending Point Park College) and has visited numerous times since, it is great to see the locals involved in movie-making of the highest calling…serving as an integral part in the filming of the upcoming Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises.”
While admittedly disappointed over how city management advised folks to handle all the commotion associated with shooting a film with…lots of shooting…the weekend found thousands at Heinz Field serving as backdrop for a fictional movie football matchup between the hometown Gotham Rogues and their rival, the Rapid City Monuments.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette did a fine job of summarizing the build-up…and the execution…of the filming on the Steelers’ home turf which included former Head Coach Bill Cowher and current players Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward…not to mention Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.
There were no “Hi Mom” moments for the extras in attendance as this was – of course – a scene set up for horrific reactions rather than homey ones. Extras were instructed to wear black and gold (Gotham’s colors)…in Pittsburgh, not a problem.
The film crew certainly has made its rounds having already been in India, England and Scotland…and will be heading to New York and Los Angeles after Pittsburgh. After all, Batman is not only Gotham’s savior…but the world’s. Film slated to open next July.
